Strength Training is the Gateway Drug

If your time in the gym doesn’t enhance your life outside of it, something has gone wrong. When you start your strength training journey, I can almost guarantee it won’t end there.

Strength training leads to better nutrition. I wrote about this a few weeks ago regarding the hierarchy of results. As a review, I recommend starting with showing up, then showing up and working hard (at your level), then getting your steps in, and finally eating well. Despite the fact that 70% of results come from nutrition, I teach to start with fitness. The discipline you build by consistently showing up to your workouts makes the discipline required for better nutrition much easier. Plus, physical activity changes how you digest the same food.

Strength Training fosters better daily habits. To ensure you make it to your morning workouts on time, you’ll likely develop a regular morning routine. Many morning routines start the evening before. Without much extra effort, your mornings and evenings become healthier and more effective thanks to a fitness routine.

Strength training enhances body awareness and daily energy. As you make progress in the gym, you’ll notice you have more energy on the days you work out. You’ll also recognize other times when you feel more energized—when you’re well-rested, well-hydrated, and eating nutritious foods. This heightened awareness makes it easier to make better choices. It’s easier to see when a “treat” is or isn’t worth it.

Building proficiency in the gym leads to more confidence and less stress.  In my opinion, this is where strength training shines above all else: As you push yourself, you inevitably become more confident both in and out of the gym. This leads to less stress in your daily life because you believe in your ability to handle whatever comes your way. That’s a win!

Better health and daily energy lead to endless possibilities—improved job performance, more energy for your kids, and more confidence to try new things. THIS is what fitness is all about! Small improvements to your lifestyle can lead to powerful changes over time.
